Can drugs cure mental illness?

Emotions, perception, communication, learning, endurance, and self-esteem are all built on a foundation of mental wellbeing. Relationships, personal emotional, well-being and contributing to the community or society all require good mental health. Many people who suffer from mental illnesses are apprehensive about discussing their condition. Mental disorder on the other hand, is not anything to be ashamed of. It is like heart disease or diabetes. Mental illnesses are also treatable.

Mental disorders may be treated by a variety of medications. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety, antipsychotic, mood-stabilizing and stimulant drugs are among the most widely prescribed medications. A combination of antidepressants known as augmentation may be needed in some cases. The most effective therapy is often an antidepressant paired with a particular form of medication such as a mood stabiliser (like Lithium), a second antidepressant or an atypical anti-psychotic drug.

Depending on the seriousness of the condition, treatment can include both drugs and psychotherapy. Most mental disorders cannot be cured at this time, but they can generally be effectively treated to reduce symptoms and enable people to function in work, school, and social settings.
